Natural Refrigerants and R290

Why the refrigerant matters: the advantages of natural refrigerants such as R290, the safety requirements, where they fit in plug-in and centralised systems, and what to ask when buying.

Why refrigerants are being talked about

When a cabinet is chosen, the conversation is usually about dimensions, shelving and appearance; the fluid circulating inside stays in the background. Yet the refrigerant determines both the efficiency of the equipment and, over the longer term, the regulatory and environmental obligations of the business. Worldwide, fluorinated gases with a high global warming potential are being phased down, and that directly affects the conditions under which equipment bought today will be serviced tomorrow.

What a natural refrigerant is

Natural refrigerants are substances that already occur in nature and do not have to be produced synthetically. The ones most often met in commercial refrigeration are hydrocarbons (R290 propane, R600a isobutane), carbon dioxide (R744) and ammonia (R717). What they share is a global warming potential far lower than that of fluorinated gases.

What R290 is

R290 is propane purified for refrigeration use. Its thermal properties are good: it does the same cooling job with a relatively small quantity of fluid. That allows both a more efficient compressor duty and a low refrigerant charge inside the equipment, which is exactly why it has become common in commercial refrigeration, especially in plug-in units.

Efficiency and energy

The refrigerant alone does not decide the energy bill; insulation, the type of door or lid, the layout and the maintenance regime matter at least as much. Within the same family of equipment, however, a properly designed R290 model can run on lower consumption. That makes the refrigerant one of the items worth comparing when quotations are put side by side.

Safety: what flammability means

R290 is a flammable refrigerant, and that imposes specific rules on design and service. On the manufacturing side, the choice of electrical components, leak prevention and ventilation design all follow from it. On the operator's side two things matter: the ventilation openings of the equipment must not be blocked, and service must be carried out by teams competent to work with this refrigerant. In correctly installed equipment, flammability is a manageable design parameter.

R290 in plug-in equipment

In plug-in cabinets the refrigeration circuit is sealed at the factory and no gas line is run on site. Because the charge stays limited, hydrocarbons suit this class of equipment well. For small and mid-sized businesses this is the most practical route to a natural refrigerant, with an installation that needs no plant room.

Centralised systems

As the number of cabinets grows, a centralised system comes to the fore; here the charge in the circuit is far larger, and the choice is assessed together with the plant room design and the applicable regulations. At that scale the decision cannot be reduced to a single gas: cooling load, pipe run length, ambient temperature and the available service infrastructure are considered together.

Which refrigerant to choose

The right question is not “which gas is best” but “which combination is right for this business”. Equipment type, cooling load, the store's growth plan, the service infrastructure in the region and the regulations in force are weighed together. Yaşarsan products are offered with a range of refrigerant options including R290, and we can work out together which option suits your project.

Questions to ask before buying

Three things should be settled when a quotation is taken: which refrigerant the equipment runs on, whether there is an authorised team able to service that refrigerant in your region, and whether the ventilation conditions where the equipment will stand are suitable. With those three answers clear, the refrigerant choice produces no surprises later.
